The Impact of the Algae Foundation

The impact of the Algae Foundation’s programs falls into two categories – education and outreach. First, the STEM based educational modules developed by the Foundation are uniquely designed to reach broad audiences who may not otherwise have access to cutting-edge course materials. These programs introduce algae as an important group of organisms that can enable multiple industries, advance technologies, improve quality of life for people on all continents, and preserve the planet. All STEM programs are offered free to educators and students and can be accessed virtually, eliminating a significant barrier to entry. Secondly, the Algae Foundation is committed to promoting the power of algae through outreach. Algae, when applied at scale, have the capacity to provide solutions to several of today’s global dilemmas. We need a knowledgeable prepared workforce and an educated public to help advance algae products. The Algae Foundation endeavors to educate people on the benefits of algae and to create enthusiasm for the crop as an essential solution for a durable future.

The Driving Need

Algae is a transformative crop with the potential to reshape how we produce food, feed, fuel, and bioproducts while conserving land and water resources. Realizing this potential depends on building a STEM-literate workforce equipped to address complex environmental and economic challenges. Hands-on experience with algae provides students with transferable skills spanning biotechnology, agriculture, engineering, and sustainability sectors. Preparing the next generation of professionals to advance the algae industry—and integrate algae solutions across diverse industries—requires sustained investment in education, workforce training, outreach, and public awareness initiatives.

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the power of algae to solve societal and environmental challenges through education, workforce development, mentoring, and public outreach. To accomplish its mission, the Algae Foundation:

  • Establishes novel workforce development opportunities through experiential learning, national research competitions, and coursework.
  • Develops STEM educational programs serving K-12 educators and students, colleges, and working professionals.
  • Supports the development of future leaders throughout the algae value chain with scholarships/grants and organizational support.
  • Facilitates communication and outreach amongst private, academic, and public sectors to support algal literacy and awareness of the benefits and opportunities of algae for humankind and the planet.
